Kandla Port in India
When India declared independence in1947 and Pakistan was separated from India, India lost the important harbor of Karachi. From then on, it was in Pakistani territory. It was therefore decided to extend the small harbor of Kandla into a massive installation with piers, infrastructure, and harbor buildings. Difficult soil conditions made elaborate foundations necessary: stakes, some of which were more than 21 meters in length had to be run into the ground. During the construction of the harbor, a new city was planned to settle displaced persons from Pakistan. Mahatma Gandhi called it 鈥淕andhidham鈥 and now has almost 200,000 residents.
